A group of surveyed experts agree, now is the time for *Fresh Looks.

 

Forged with the same precision one uses in building a LEGO®, quick and with reckless abandon. His engine purrs with a low hum of facetiousness, driven by a need to see all of the ‘cool shit’ in the world. This trash-man, who churns on a diet of bitter-chocolates and heaps of pasta is but a humble-hand in the dark-arts of Commercial-Graphic-Visual-Communication™.

Consensys: Host and sponsor of a 2017 Blockchain Hackathon in North Carolina. I was part of a team to compete.

One of the most intense and exciting things I’ve done as a designer was compete in a 48 hour Blockchain Hackathon. My team ended up winning by two points, I like to believe it was our brand that gave us the edge.

Our app concept was to combine the functionality of Venmo with the blockchain and market it to the charity world in an effort to cut down on misused funds. We were able to build a functioning prototype and strong brand.

My favorite aspect of the project was developing a consistent illustration style that I could work with quickly to communicate big concepts around the blockchain.

Spectra Foundry is a publisher of a fantasy world centered around magic co-evolution.

Spectra Expanded Display Font

Spectra expanded started as a passion after I created a unique ‘R’ on a whim. From there it grew into a multi-weight/style family.

The letter-forms are built to have a consistent presence, each character fits within a rectangle to create uniquely justified layouts.

You can buy the typeface here.

Each weight and style of the typeface includes a set of ornaments that can be combined to create illustrations.

A friend of mine wanted to add a bit of zest to an arcade cabinet he was restoring for a local barcade in Chattanooga.

I love off-beat projects, and this was definitely one of them. I’m a huge gamer, so on a certain level this was a perfect fit. Branding an arcade cabinet was a great exercise!

I really enjoy pixel art, so getting to combine that medium with branding was a really interesting concept. It lead to a bunch of little discoveries.

Bellhops was an 8 person team trying to reinvent the moving experience. I joined to help define their identity.

My favorite piece of Bellhops memorabilia was this rickshaw we designed.

I made a number of gifs for the mobile app, this little fella was the best.

Vinyl Moon is a monthly record subscription service. The brand commissions artists to create artwork for each album around a theme of the music recorded on the vinyl.

Music is a powerful tool in conjuring imagery. For #025’s playlist I opted to dig into the world of the occult, visually.

Adding a spot-varnish to the outside sleeve really helped the design come to life.

Coca-Cola Global Retail is dedicated to bringing Coke to apparel, flatware, and more. They partner with big names like Kitsch, Moleksine, LEGO, and others for uniquely Coke branded products.

Fresh out of college in 2010, I joined Coke as a designer. I was tasked with creating unique style-guides for retail partners to produce a range of goods. This was some of my favorite work to be a part of.

For the unveiling of Coke’s new Heritage glass one of my patterns was used as a backdrop for the event. Pretty rad!

One of the larger projects I worked on was a style-guide called Coke Americana. It was used to produce a number of items. This bag especially embodies the spirit of that program, fusing the vintage ‘badges’ with an amazing color-way combo.

The history of Coke is deep, especially when it comes to the iconic bottle design. So it was a great privilege to design a program that featured that history.

SILO is a music venue in the industrial district of Brooklyn, New York. They focus on house, dance, and EDM music.

SILO

SILO (fka Secret Loft) started as an underground party in a converted auto garage in Williamsburg.

With the brand, I wanted to create a sense of digital modernism by adding glitch/distortion to the logotype. This was done to reflect the brand’s core identity of digital music.

The building which houses SILO, a quonset hut was used as inpsiration for the logo mark and various graphic assets. These elements borrow the geometric qualities of the hut to create a cohesive identity.

Picmonkey is a product of Shutterstock, I was brought on board to develop a new illustration system for the brand.

The illustrations my team developed for the brand were imbued with a sense of whimsy and tech.

Designing the icons for the web and mobile app presented a challenge in communication. Concepts like ‘holiday’ and ‘trendy’ are often nebulous which makes it difficult to translate into a visual form.

One of the major draws of the product are the in-house illustrations for users to collage into their materials. I produced hundreds of them.

I love food so getting to do an experiment in that realm was a ton of fun. The ultimate goal of the project was a recipe blog with rich content.

We developed a library of icons to represent recipe ingredients and steps.

Providing brand standards for a baseball training facility was an interesting challenge. It required insight into a world I was not familiar with, but held plenty of richness in content and history. Illustrating a ton of rats for Jay was a treat.

My team and I at UTÖKA spent many late nights painting their restaurant and Doggy Dogg’s hot-dog cart, but the results were pretty rewarding.

Around 2016 I had the awesome opportunity to rebrand a design studio. Together we came up with a fresh identity that helped focus their efforts. It was a real fun time.

Making the new studio’s brand standards adaptable was a key to its success. Elements from the visual language were carried into the new space by introducing colors and patterns to the interior. It’s exciting to see my work carried on after the project was completed!

One of my favorite projects at the studio was developing a monthly t-shirt contest.

Now known as Sweet Phone, Lunar Wireless offered a very reasonable phone plan for people who utilized very little data.

I never thought I’d be working for a mobile carrier, but things happen? Lunar was a great exercise in illustrating for a unique company.

Lunar’s social media presence was key to their success, so we capitalized on that by producing daily illustrations. Each had a different value proposition that compelled users to make the switch.

Sharon Dennehy and Miya Bailey started Notch 8 Gallery in the heart of Atlanta for local artists to have a space to feature their work. Exhibitions are typically group shows.

Notch8 is an exciting gallery that shows some of the best talent in Portland, Maine.

I designed a ton of postcards for the exhibitions. We often had themes around each show so there was never a standard design, which ended up turning each card into a little piece of art.

One of the more exciting parts of designing for the gallery is developing the entrance-wall. Each artist and show has a unique identity which I attempt to cater to.

One of the biggest comedy nights in Atlanta is Ladie’s Night. It’s a hilarious time with short films and live standup. Branding it was a fun undertaking, allowing me to really dig into something funny and strange. (Yes, it’s Ladie’s)

The three founders of Ladie’s Night are equally funny and exceptionally creative. They also did me a solid by mimicking my illustration for their photo-shoot.

We produced a number of posters. This was one of my favorites.

I’m a huge fan of Blackletter typefaces. I especially love Fraktur. So for STFU I wanted to play with the idea of modernizing that style and turning it into a display-face.

The intention with my typeface was to take the glpyhs derived from handwritten letter-forms and create a system of reusable parts.

I wanted my first foray in type design to be different and thematic. I chose to create a typeface based on the dollar and frame it with the failed war on drugs.

I built the typeface out of actual dollars, photographed each letter, then processed that in illustrator. The challenge here was being consistent with form and the pattern created by the texture of the bill. You can cop the typeface here.

Started in 2011, MASS collective begin its life as an empty 20,000 square foot building and became an incredible maker-space.

MASS collective

A 501c3 non-profit, MASS is an establishment in the Atlanta community bringing one of the best maker-spaces to the South-East.

The MASS brand-identity was developed to have an air of humor but visually be in line with something from Bauhaus/Constructivism.

MASS is acronym for Math, Art, Science, and Social, it offers everyone from painters to welders a space to see their ideas come to fruition.

We hosted a number of events in Atlanta. One of the highlights was demonstrating a Tesla Coil we built for a Halloween festival.

Batch was conceived by Ustin Zarubin and Daniel Selans in an effort to improve observability for messaging systems.

Branding abstract concepts is always difficult, Batch was a challenge and joy to develop a visual language for.

My primary goal for the rebrand was to imbue a sense of approachability, airiness, and modernity without being trendy. Using simple shapes, thin lines, and focusing on readability helped guide the system.

For the illustration system I worked with Madison Delong to develop a modular and consistent style. The illustrations, built on an isometric grid help to communicate the way Batch works. The illustration system has three different types: primary, blog, and technical.
